Wet carpet in your Porsche Boxster? Here’s why you should get it looked at asap

eagle

If you think your Porsche Boxster may be suffering from water ingress, do not ignore it - assuming the wet carpet under the seats is a one off could be an expensive mistake.

Our Porsche technicians recently investigated a case of water ingress for a customer and discovered that the leak had led to an ECU located under the Boxster’s passenger seat being damaged.

As you can see from the photos, the unit that controls the alarm, rear lid and roof had been sitting in water and suffered as a result.

There are a couple of possibilities for the cause of water ingress. One is a perished door membrane and the other is dirt and leaves blocking the rear roof drains and forcing rainwater into the cabin.

The water almost always collects under the passenger seat, which can make it difficult to spot. However, if your Boxster suffers from persistent condensation or smells damp inside, feel the carpet under the seat to check whether or not it is wet.

If it is, seek an expert opinion asap. Drying the car out and clearing the roof drains are simple jobs, while replacing a damaged door membrane is relatively inexpensive - certainly much less costly than having to repair or replace an ECU.

This type of problem will be picked up by our trained technicians during a service, but the intervals between services give it plenty of time to develop into an expensive issue before your scheduled trip to the workshop. It’s worth spending a few minutes to check for signs of damp to spot it early.
