Is a ticking noise normal in a 997?

Yes, when the engine is cold and has been stood a while it can take a few minutes for the oil to circulate – this is down to the design of the Flat 6 engine, however it could be a sign of worn hydraulic lifters or it could be signs of, what is known as piston slap – depending where the noise is coming from and the tone etc.
